MIAMI (CBSMiami) The conflict in Ukraine may be located on the opposite side of the world but South Floridians are one of the groups helping those who are leaving the country.

A lot of Sunny Isles Jewish residents are currently fundraising and helping plan a comprehensive humanitarian effort.

Emmanuil Grinshpun Marsha Jaquays, Florida Friends of Laniado Hospital reported that 1,100 patients visited the other night.

She revealed that more than two million Ukrainian refugees have fled war-torn Ukraine. A large portion of them are traveling through Moldova which shares a border with Ukraine.

“From Moldova, this Jewish community is helping them get across the border, and then maybe offering them food, shelter, and clothing,” added Jaquays.

A large portion of the humanitarian effort is being helmed right here in South Florida from Sunny Isles.

“My Aufgabe is to draw all the resources that are available to us from American society to assist with the crisis in Moldova.” Emmanuil Grinshpun Emmanuil grinshpun, an aid worker, stated that there was a complete team working on the ground to coordinate humanitarian efforts in Moldova.

This is compounded by the reality that Moldova is a country that is among the most deprived in the world. However, the people who are part of this project claim that they will not be prevented by any means.

Grinshpun: “When our brothers and sisters from Ukraine were visiting, we didn’t have any reason to think about it. Instead we just began doing it.”

Jaquays echo sentiments

“Who was there during the Holocaust, when the Nazis assumed power? How many people stayed silent and claimed it wasn’t me, I’m not Jewish I’m not in my community, I’m not from Europe. We shouldn’t repeat the same mistakes we made by the past. There is a saying “If you don’t now, when.” Emmanuil Grinshpun If not me, then who?
